There is a problem with all the resources available to us, there is too many! Here is a proposal for a solution to the problem!
The Problem with Publishers
Publishing websites can be difficult to navigate. Today with so many options out there for a writer finding a publishing website can be easy, however, once one is found navigating around the website can be hard. It is daunting to see a page just filled with names and contact information of publishing companies.
Then on top of the daunting amount of publishers, there are the small presses and large presses, and sometimes the large presses swallow up the small presses, therefore hiding the small presses from someone that might benefit from it.
What it will cost vs the benefits:
There are only a few costs to this solution. Creating a website takes time, a little money, and knowledge of how to use code. The first cost will be getting the website URL, a small detail that can cost as little as ten dollars/year. You have to pay to use a URL. I suggest a personal website instead of a template from a different website to individualize us from everyone else.
Then we have to think about who is going to build it for us. This could be someone from inside the company, who we could provide compensation for, or it could be someone we have hired. If it came down to it, we could train someone how to write HTML code quickly. There are many helpful sites about how to write HTML code online.
The problem with hiring someone is that we would have to pay them. Which is why I suggest finding someone we know with a knowledge of how to write code, and get their opinion on creating a website. If they are comfortable doing that, then we can talk about compensation. On top of just the website itself, it will need to be updated every few months or so just to make sure it has the most recent information and it still works the way it is supposed to. Creating a website can take little time or a lot of time.
If we want to make an excellent, easy to navigate website we will need to plan it out. We’re going to differentiate genres by using separate pages, which may sound like it will get confusing, but we could have a pop-up window when the website is opened telling whomever is visiting how to utilize everything in it. This tactic is used everywhere now, usually seen to tell a viewer about something new to the website like a “hey look at this new feature!” but the one we will use will say something like “read this first!” or “helpful tips!” with highlighted areas to show where to locate certain things like: a publishers contact info or how to change the list by changing the genre.
Why It Matters:
There are many publishers in the US. So many, in fact, that trying to find the right one for you can be nearly impossible. Creating a website that has clear headings and navigation clues will make a lot of people happy. It will alleviate some of the stress that inevitably comes with the territory. This website can change the way people see finding a publisher. They will go from feeling intimidated by how many publishers there are, to relaxed because not only did they find a publisher they like, they also did it with little to no stress on themselves.
Thank you.
How we can fix it:
The solution to the problem is to make a website with clear differentials between publishers by genre. I propose that we design a website that is clear to a whole swath of people. We want it to interest a browser and enlighten a writer. Doing both of those things can be difficult. Sometimes it is hard to not get lost in the design of a website.
Getting lost in the website is intimidating. When a person goes to look for a publisher and sees a huge list of every publisher in the country it is easy for them to get discouraged. The website we create will break down each publisher by the genres of writing they like to actually publish and give a brief overview of what that particular publisher is about.
The Issue at Hand Explained:
The problem is that writerly help websites can be too broad or confusing for a browser. It is a problem because the subject, publishing, is a very broad subject in itself. It has a lot of subjects, and a lot of publishing companies only publish certain genres of books. This limits the capabilities of a good website because of all the sub headings inside of a very broad heading.
Say there is a person who just finished writing a novel, and they’re ready to send it out. This person has never looked into getting published before now. They start by typing “publishers” into Google.com. The first hit is a website with a title in all caps “LIST OF PUBLISHERS”. That doesn’t do much for this person looking for a specific kind of publisher. After that website on google it goes into specific publisher’s websites like Harper Collins. That doesn’t give the new writer a lot of information.
